Kitten Behavior Training and Problems With Kittens

Changing kitten behavior early on is best, since kittens, as with other small animals, are very smart. Once older than a couple of months they rapidly become as fascinated by human activities as they are by adult cats.

When you bring a new kitten into your home and you have other cats it can create some confusion. Your older cat may not be too excited about having a new bundle of energy around that won’t leave her alone. Although sometimes your older cat may become rejuvenated and more playful then you’ve seen in a long time. Watching any kitty get a burst of energy and romp through the house is blast. Especially when you get 2 or 3 of them chasing each other.

With proper training, many bad kitten behavior problems can be changed. Problems like jumping up on the kitchen table, sharpening claws on your new furniture, biting, chewing on extension cords etc. are all behaviours you can change once you understand how kittens think. It’s much better to start any training while they are still a kitten. Like humans, old habits are harder to break. Of course, when they look at you with those cute, adorable eyes, you may just melt and give in to whatever they want. So much for changing behaviors! Huh!

When it comes to kitten behavior training it’s important to understand that training cats is much different from training dogs. Cats have many natural instincts. One is the instinct to hunt. The love to play hunting games. Wiggling your toes or fingers under the sheets is a favorite (those little teeth and claws are sharp though). So are many cat toys, catnip toys and even rolling up a piece of paper into a paper ball can provide hours of fun. Just throw the paper ball so that it lands slightly behind a pillow, and it’s hard to tell just what action you might see.

Kittens enjoy being higher than anyone else in the room, and will migrate to high places. Kittens particularly seem to enjoy sitting on shoulders or high shelves. It’s not unusual to find your kitten at the highest place in the room they can find. They love to have the best observation post in the room. Many cat injuries come from them trying to get to that high place. So make sure that they have a safe way to get there or that you block that area off somehow.

Cats of all ages enjoy plenty of daytime naps, and love nothing more than a nice cozy bed or sofa, or a favorite spot in the sunshine for some mid afternoon basking. It seems like they spend most of the day napping. They’ll tend to have their favorite spots, but every now and then they will surprise you. Keep your camera handy. Some of the positions that you’ll find them in are worth taking a picture. We just love it when they decide to curl up on our laps for a siesta. Especially in the winter time, it’s like have heating pad, only better because this one purrs.

Take the time to learn why kittens act the way they do. Many decisions you make like having your cat declawed will change if you learn the basic mistakes most people make in not providing the proper scratching areas for their little friend. If cat owners would just take the time to research and learn why kittens behave the way they do, it would save a lot problems.

Kitten behavior can depend some on the breed of cat that you have. Some behaviours are a result of natural instincts which you really can’t alter, but many are based on habit and expectations. Those you can change.
