Is there a cat toilet train system that really works? Cats are amazing creatures with impressive instinctual habits. Kittens are taught by their mothers to cover their waste, and most cats are already litter box trained by the time they are adopted by their permanent owners. However, litter boxes can be smelly and a hassle to maintain, and some people want to find a more convenient way for cats to “do their business.”

So the idea of training a cat to use the toilet sounded like a good idea and something worth pursuing. So is it really reasonable to think that toilet training a cat is possible? As in most things its definitely possible. There are many cat owners that are success stories. So the question is, is it a possibility for all cats? The answer: It depends. The concept of teaching a cat to use the toilet forces your kitty to do an act that is not natural for the cat. It’s very possible that he can learn, but be aware that he may have problems, and you as his owner need to be very understanding of these needs.

Some warning signs that toilet training is wrong for your cat are: he is old (6 years is generally considered “senior” for cats); he is physically unable to jump onto the toilet or balance on the seat; he has had elimination problems in the past; he is unwilling or afraid to try new things, or he dislikes the bathroom or toilet. If you lack the patience and the time to spend teaching and cleaning up messes, toilet training may be too difficult for you.

You start by placing the box next to the toilet, on the floor, and allowing your cat to use it as he would normally use a litter box. It always important that you don’t do any thing that will rush your cat. Give them time to acclimate. You can expect that any cat toilet train system will take many weeks and possibly several months. Be prepared that your kitty may just not be ready for this and you may have to go back to the standard litter box. Don’t try to force your cat, it may cause him to not want to use any litter box. Just take it slowly and watch for progress. If your kitty does adjust well to this training, you will be one more cat owner who is now free from dealing with a litter box.
