Tulip care for best results in spring

Tulips have a long and rich history. They are one of the best known spring bulbs. They were grown for many years in the Turkish Empire before the mid-1500s, when the Austrian ambassador, Ogier Busbecq, sent some seeds to his friend Carolus Clusius. Clusius was a French botanist, who maintained the imperial gardens in Vienna. The tulip gardens he developed there, won many admirers. Over time, more and more people adopted tulips for planting and tulips were frequently offered as gifts between traders, and horticulturists.

Today, tulips are the rage all over the world. So what goes best with tulips? Tulips and grape hyacinths should do well in each other’s company. When you plant them, put in the tulip bulbs first, then add some soil and plant the grape hyacinths more shallowly on top of it.

Tulips are normally strong for only one year, whereas narcissus (specifically daffodils) can be counted on for a couple of years. However, you can certainly extend the lifespan of any bulb by proper care and fertilization.
